Surrealisme is een literaire en artistieke stroming die in 1924 in Frankrijk verscheen, geschreven door André Breton. Het kan worden vertaald als "boven realisme" of "meer dan echt". Het is een dictaat van het denken, waarbij rede en esthetische of morele zorgen moeten worden uitgewist. Voor Breton wordt het surrealisme gerechtvaardigd door een verlangen naar emancipatie: door het onbewuste te bevrijden om het met het bewuste te verzoenen, zal de mensheid zich kunnen bevrijden van de beperkingen opgelegd door logica en rede.
