Wat is de oorsprong van de Lak techniek?

Schilderij gemaakt met een hars afgeleid van sap, verschillende struiken of met lakverven op basis van thermohardende harsen. De techniek bestaat uit het bedekken van de laklagen met een krachtige polijsting tussen elke laag. Het is meestal een glad glanzend uiterlijk, maar kan soms ook satijn of erg mat zijn. Lak is een term die wordt gebruikt om een hars te beschrijven die is gemaakt van het sap van verschillende struiken en die een vaste laag vormt wanneer deze wordt gedroogd (Japanse vernis of urushi-e), of voorwerpen die ervan zijn gemaakt. Bij uitbreiding worden ook bepaalde glanzende en gladde verven gekwalificeerd als lak, hoewel deze stof niet of weinig wordt gebruikt bij de bereiding ervan. Van Aziatische oorsprong (voornamelijk China en Japan) vertaalt deze techniek zich in verschillende productiemethoden: we maken onderscheid tussen gebeeldhouwde lakken, gedecoreerde lakken (togidashi decor, hiramaki-e decor of takamaki-e decor) of zelfs burgaute lak (ingelegd met moeder-of -parel). De meest illustere ambachtslieden van deze techniek bevinden zich in China: Chen Ching, Huang Xia Wu of Lao Wei; in Japan: Kano Naonobu, Naga Shige of Zechin; en in Europa: Gérard Dagly, Eileen Gray, Jean Dunant, Gaston Suisse of Frédéric Halbreich.
