artist statement.misti freeman
I paint images by breaking them down into exaggerated shapes of highlights, shadows, and colors. This style is most easily interpreted through the viewer squinting his or her eyes. When the viewer's eyes are squinted, shadows and highlights cast upon objects seem to separate from the object's background and form bolder shapes. I take this vision of the viewer and myself and add intense colors and outlines to make the lights and darks stand out from the background of my canvas even more, thus creating an interesting picture of lights and darks that one may normally see as one squints one's eyes. My art pieces are to be looked at in normal focus; however, carry the same effect as one’s eye’s being squinted.
