Mixed-Up Chromosomes (2024) 绘画 由 Milo Abadilla

As in much, if not all of his work, Abadilla’s Mixed-Up Chromosomes draws directly from personal experience and observation. Weaving rich tapestries with hints of the supernatural, the artist’s work achieves a balance of blending detailed configuration with improvisation, posing questions that invite dialogue and redefine impressions. The densely populated, almost spectral image raises multiple questions – of gender, of political ideologies, and of the external expressions we chose or are chosen by. Here we glimpse the fracture and displacement between self identity, and even contemporary versus ancestral narratives. The choice of nude bodies depicted in neutral brown tones rethinks issues of race, ethnic or sexual identity. Abadilla engages the body so that amorphous shapes reveal abstract human forms. Throughout his work, ambiguity supports his investigations.

As with Mixed-Up Chromosomes, much of Abadilla’s work addresses issues at the forefront of politics, personal freedom, and social interpretations. The artist considers influence and exchange to be crucial to his work and draws upon varying cultural references. His fluid blend of the abstract and the finite is part of the alchemy behind his craft.
