The series morceaux d'espaces consists of assemblages of small oil paintings. This process of juxtaposing canvasses which have been painted individually often weeks apart facilitates the questioning and playing with the conventional pictorial sign systems. It disrupts any intentional symbolism and at times the illusion of space's depth becomes a desorientating force. But ultimately painting is a dialogue with color.

Paris-born Martine Jardel received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from San Francisco State University. She lived and worked in Yemen, Columbia and Canada before settling in California. "I believe the experience in different climates, landscapes, people and cultures are a nutrient source of my art".

"Painting is an engagement with the ambiguous and the unknown. The final surface of a painting is the product of the traces of all the layers beneath it. This process of layering paint generates unstable meanings which reflect the arbitrariness of language. Painting is resistant to naming."
