Idziaszek

Ruda Śląska, Poland
Artist (Painting)
Born unknown date

Marek Idziaszek is one of the most interesting Silesian non-profesional artists of the middle-aged generation. He is one of the few artists who managed to free themselves from outside influences and create their own individual style.
In the 1980’s he came into contact with the “Bielszowice” visual arts group. After some unsuccessful attempts at traditional oil painting, he decided to try his hand at a different technique and took up painting on glass. However,it is not the kind of painting which relies on traditional folk motifs known, among others, from the Polish highland folklore. The difrence lies both in the technique and the subject matter.
This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the painter’s debut and troughout that time the subject matter Marek Idziaszek’s paintings has been connected and foremost with the Upper Silesia region. His works are far from being deatched representations of the landscape-the artist puts himself in the role of an observer, but also that of a commentator who impartially,if with a touch of sarcasm, registers facts.
The artist’s favourite themes come from reality around him,for example he paints pieces of landscape glimpsed during a bike ride, later he thinks of a situation or anecdote matching this landscape, and finally fills it with people-ordinary people you often pass by in the street, absorbed in the hustle and bustle of life, sometimes homeless people met at a dustbin,at other times drunkards lolling on a bench.Painntings created in this manner, trough their theatre-like quality and grotesque exaggerations, are evocative of Breughel’s works while introducing the viwer into the mood of a friendly chat. But the theme is not everything, the atmosphere of Idziaszek’s works is just as important-it is warm and lyrical, created mainly by a play of light and colour. That atmosphere is heightened by the perspective from wchich you look at the painting-the viwer is close enough to discern the detalils and at the same time far enough to keep a certain distance.
Marek Idziaszek paints few works a year-two,three sometimes one.The idea matures slowly, the artist has thoroughly think the theme over, and later decide how to best represent it on glass surface. The very process of painting also takes a long time because paint on glass behaves differently than it does on canvas.First,a rough sketch has to be made, and the next stage is to draw the contours-slowly,with care and attention to detail, because later nothing may be added or supplemented-after the next layer has been put on,nothing can be corrected.
Marek Idziaszek tries to record the silesian which is disappearing, almost passing away, but he is also intent on pointing at the changes which are taking place. At the same time,he avoids pathos and megalomania-his silesia is familiar, direct and sometimes just like the one we see from the windows or traditional worker houses”familoki”,very often like the one we fail to notice busying ourselves with everyday life.
