My Journey
Born in the Republic of Panama of Chinese parents, Ms. Yap has been able to magically blend East and West on canvas. Within the walls of her
parent’s home, she was immersed in the beauty, balance and perfection of millennial traditions passed on from one generation to another. Once outside these walls, her senses were overcome by the amazing colors, sounds and energy of the Tropics. Panama provided a bustling backdrop of exciting people, places, and music. Most importantly, its natural surroundings provided the perfect artistic inspiration.
A few years ago, Ms. Yap’s artistry led her to pursue the focus of her
current work. She wished to forever change the way people looked at flowers. From flowers, as common and ordinary products of nature, to flowers as unique and wonderful miracles of this Earth. From flowers as just beautiful objects, to flowers as a source of intense visual and emotional pleasure.
Ms. Yap’s exquisite technique utilizes “extreme close-ups”. Through it she tries to compel the viewer to observe flowers in great detail. These close-ups of powerful colors and exuberant shapes aim at eliciting the awe of the beholder.
Ms. Yap’s technique goes even further, fully intent in shocking the senses and stirring the deep emotions of the subconscious mind. Viewers feel drawn to “let go” and immerse themselves in the colors. In many, they evoke happiness, exhilaration, and even ecstasy…yet never indifference.
The type of flower in most of Ms. Yap’s work is unrecognizable. She refers to them as “Organic Abstracts”.
Ms. Yap states: “The color in my flowers surpasses shape and form.
I hope that they will delight the viewer’s senses and enlighten their mind, bringing them great enjoyment.
Ms. Yap holds a BA in Journalism and Graphic Design from the University of Georgia. She is currently teaching at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in Miami, Florida.
