"Capitalizing on a widespread curiosity of Idaho, a land of haunting isolation and a separatist spirit, this series offers a darker vision of American life that focuses on documenting not merely places in the state - but a state of mind. Embracing painting as a major means of expression, it eschews many modern tendencies, while still addressing contemporary issues (such as environmental & cultural decay, and the retrograde motion of art). Despite the self-imposed limits of the approach, it finds artistic inspiration in the everyday, and even goes so far as to suggest a glimmer of hope through unveiling the unseen beauty and radiance of the present moment, as well as a growing unease."

This may be too confessional (?), but there are times when all the universe feels alive, and radiant, and connected, & it’s as if you’re looking out at the world and seeing nothing but innards. Then there are those other times… when you feel like an outsider right in the middle of it all. Or trapped in an eerily empty universe. Somehow my work is born from, and shaped by, the struggle of dealing with these two seemingly contradictory experiences. As well as the impulse to fill up space with something to make sense of it all...

Grounded in both old and new traditions, I first trained in Connecticut as an Illustrator, Graphic Designer, and Muralist before heading west to pursue a M.F.A. at Idaho State University in 1987. There, I learned to allow myself the freedom to chase my own vision and let the elements of my past collide with creative results...
I have always responded to the technique, history, finish, and the almost surreal mood and lighting of old painting. I have also been influenced by the fresh approach of Modern Art, as well as the skill of many Illustrators. "Pan Imagery" grew from the use of painting as a way to reconcile my various interests and experiences as an artist to a contemporary context. Luck was also a factor, as it was the "happy accident" of some artwork falling to the floor that launched this series- which also strives for subtlety, precision, and a "pre-fab" appearance.
With Pan Imagery I'm playing with images, references, and techniques that are derived from many genres, to create interesting combinations of elements, open interpretations, poetic effects, or personal meaning. My source material for this work is often Art History, the media, memory, or just a spontaneous interaction with paint... I merely enjoy creating art to free-associate with.

"I am inspired by the challenging geologic forms and vibrant colors of the Moab area, this is where the earth speaks most clearly to me. Nature's forces and rhythms, and the power of wind, rock, and water create monuments that are a tribute to the amazing beauty and grandness of nature... this truly humbles me. I now realize that I can't hope to duplicate nature, I can only strive to use paint and pastel in a pleasing and personal way... and using pastels to depict sandstone seems the perfect match of technique to topic."

An accumulation of all my experiences and beliefs, for me painting has become more than an expression of myself, the illustration of ideas, or simply an arrangement of form, it is an amalgam of all those concerns and an ongoing process of discovery and evolution that demands a union of intuition and intellect. This allows me to explore many diverse issues and create an Art of Questions. Working in this manner I am able to draw upon the visible world for inspiration, and also the personal, symbolic, and imaginative one within, to form a transcription of inner and outer awareness and an Icon of Reconciliation.
