Summer Bouquet in Japanese Vase.
In 2008, in London, I was invited to participate a group exhibition with the theme “Gothic”. I had no doubt what to portray for this event. The thing is that couple months before this, me with my friend spent a holiday in Spain, where we visited Seville and its Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See.
In my life I have seen a lot of sacred architecture. Honestly, I love visiting that kind of places😊 (as well as local markets, but that’s a different story). There one could feel the inner life of city, its cultural background, and these places are usually (if it’s not a Protestant church) full of artistic values, what have been always interested me. Undoubtfully, Seville Cathedral is masterpiece of Gothic architecture and it is one of the largest as well. Perhaps, that is why inside of it you feel the infinite extend of inner space. The combination of gray stone with openwork carved golden altar, sparkling scarlet color, all this creates a very strong impression. Here in the cathedral is the tomb where Christopher Columbus rests in peace.
Some things as smell and taste are very difficult to describe, as well as feelings or sensations. Then you begin, you quickly enough learn that these are just words… inside the space itself there is something big, something powerful, which goes beyond the limits of ordinary human life, and it’s tangible physically. It’s not my business to judge the moral of the achievements of the discoverer of the New World, but assessing the size of golden altar, the scale of the robbery is clear, nevertheless… this place still sounds an echo of its greatness. I felt it.
So, the first works were painted, it followed with others, and then a crisis broke out. I had to leave London and return to my home city Vilnius. At that time, I thought it wouldn’t be for long, may be for one year… (😊who would know) It was a middle of a June, my Mom brought from local market a bouquet of beautiful peonies with irises to cheer me up and I’ve started to paint them. I used gold foil for the background of the paintings which was a kind of continuation of the golden altars theme and in the same time an echo of the Japanese painted screens. Later these two different short cycles were combined in one and entitled “The Gold of Seville”.
В 2008 году в Лондоне мне предложили поучаствовать в групповой выставке с темой “Готика”. У меня не возникло сомнений что мне изобразить для этого события. Дело в том, что пару месяцев до этого мы с моим другом путешествовали по Испании и заехали на день в Севилью, где посетили главную достопримечательность города Севильскую кафедру.
За свою жизнь я повидала немало сакральной архитектуры. Если честно, люблю посещать такие места😊, (впрочем, как и местные рынки, но это другая история). В таких местах можно почувствовать какой внутренней жизнью живет город, его культурный контекст, к тому же это место, где обычно (если это не протестантский костел), собрано немало художественных ценностей, а это меня всегда интересовало. Севильская кафедра, бесспорно, шедевр готической архитектуры и это один из самый больших по величине католических соборов. Возможно, поэтому внутри ощущается бесконечная протяженность внутреннего пространства. Сочетание серого камня с ажуром резного золотого алтаря, полыхающего алым цветом, все это создает очень сильное впечатление. В соборе находиться гробница, где покоится Кристофер Колумб.
Возможно, меня не поймут, так как некоторые вещи трудно описать словами (это как описать вкус или запах. Ты можешь говорить кислое, сладкое, но это всего лишь слова…) так вот, внутри в самом пространстве есть что-то большое, что-то могучее, выходящее за пределы обычной человеческой жизни и это ощутимо физически. Не мне судить моральную сторону достижений первооткрывателя Нового света, конечно, оценивая величину золотого алтаря понятен масштаб грабежа, все же… место это до сих пор еще звучит отголоском его величия. Так мне почувствовалось.
Первые две работы были написаны, потом пополнились еще парой, а потом грянул кризис. И мне пришлось покинуть Лондон и вернуться домой в Вильнюс. В то время я думала, что это ненадолго, максимум на год… Был июнь, самый разгар цветения. Мама, чтобы я не грустила принесла с рынка букет прекрасных пионов и ирисов. И я села их писать. Для фона я использовала золотую фольгу, что было своего рода продолжением темы золотых алтарей и отголоском японских золотых расписных ширм. Так из двух разных по стилистике и теме коротких циклов, родилась серия работ, под названием “Золото Севильи”.
