Julia Suptel was born in Ukraine in 1987 and now lives and works in Dresden, Germany. She has many interests, one of the main ones being psychology and (art) therapy where she moves intuitively, inventing her own coping techniques and processes. She is a keen yoga practioner and seeker, a certain thoughtfulness is present in most of her artworks. Julia works mainly with soft and oil pastel and her works feature scenes from everyday life, landscapes and floral arrangements.
She is a self-taught artist with a background in Cultural Management from the University of Amsterdam and BA in Domestic Design from School of Form in Poznan, Poland. Her works are in private collections in Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Italy, France, Ireland, Poland and the USA.
Julia says about her work: „I let my curiosity and colour inspiration drive my work, not knowing often where the next experiment might take me. I explore different styles but naive art and Impressionism, as well as fauvism and mystical realism are the ones that resonate the most”.
“If you work with your hands, you're a laborer. If you work with your hands and your mind, you're a craftsman. If you work with your hands and your mind and your heart, you're an artist.” - st. Francis of Assisi

This series features a collection of miniature oil pastels, framed in vintage and new modern frames [...]
This series features a collection of miniature oil pastels, framed in vintage and new modern frames and was created in autumn 2024. If you enjoy creativity, cozy details, and a sprinkle of irony, you might find something you love here.
Each painting has its own little story and adds a splash of inspiration to your surroundings. Whether it features a fun phrase like "This is weird" or gentle floral designs, these pieces can bring a unique charm to your decor.
What is special about oil pastel, is that it is quite challenging to create fine details. Thus, this miniature format is unique and recognized by connoisseurs.
Every piece is handcrafted with care, reflecting a bit of soul in each detail. They're perfect for anyone who appreciates the beauty in life's little moments and enjoys surrounding themselves with characterful items. Some frames are newly hand-painted vintage, others are new lacquered solid wood.
See if any piece speaks to you! I’d love to help you add a touch of magic to your home.

The presented series has evolved over the passed year as an exploration of my own feeling of motherland [...]
The presented series has evolved over the passed year as an exploration of my own feeling of motherland and its image imprinted in my (sub)conscious. I was born and raised in Ukraine and although I've been living in various European countries during the past 10 years, I've never lost touch with Ukraine, regularly visiting family and friends there. The war hit me hard in 2022, as well as millions of Ukranians. I didn't have to flee myself but I hosted refugees and volunteered, and grieved. After the first months of shock and dispair have passed, I continued my art practice and found myself depicting memories of my childhood and hopes and worries about Ukraine and Ukranians. Just as the whole nation is rediscovering its history and value now, paying an enormous price of war, I'm revisiting my own identity and connection to the country in this body of work.
Some of these works reach to universal archetypes, like the tree of life or the forest, some came as a prophetic revelation (like "Kherson") and some are a direct response to the horrible crimes against civil Ukrainians, when words were no more.

My work dedicated to Ukraine from 2022 was selected to be part of a curated online exhibition Home by Azalea Arts community and is on display now on their website here
The exhibition features 17 artists working across various mediums and Invited artists to reflect on the theme of Home and its physical, emotional, and metaphorical interpretations.
I am very to happy to have been selected with this artwork below that is an oil pastel on paper. It is called „The land of rainbows and flowers. Ukraine“ and features my pain and sorrow because of the fullscale russian invasion in 2022 covered by hope and love and childhood memories I have of my home country. This painting is part of a larger Heritage series that explores inner landscapes of memories and reactions to the war.

My textile artwork is taking part in a group exhibition in Amsterdam. The venue is organized by ArtAviso and is going to take place from 1st to 18th of September. Artwork will be available for purchase, all profits will be donated to Ukrainian charities. More info on the project
I was 7 months pregnant when the war in my homeland Ukraine broke out. Ongoing news about losses among civilians broke my heart every day. Everyday I opened the news feed and saw a new number of victims, dead and wounded. Here’s the point I’ve changed my initial concept for the project and decided to devote my piece to the children of Ukraine who were killed since February 2022 by Russian army. It depicts a sunflower - one of the traditional Ukrainian plants and export resources. Every cross is a life of a child taken away by war.
I started when the number of deaths was already quiet big and then continued adding stitches, crying over the victims of shelling of Mariupol, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odessa and many more Ukrainian cities. I knew that I will be adding more every single day but never made a stitch in advance, hoping that I will actually have to add no more. It felt weird and painful to breastfeed my baby and add a stitch for every child killed, infants as well.
I’m sending out this piece of artwork unfinished because the war is still on and Russians continue killing Ukrainians and destroy our homes and land. By now 362 children were killed, about thrice as much injured and made handicapped, a few millions had to leave their homes and several hundred thousands have no home to go back to, no kindergarten, school or sports club to go to if they are back. This what Russian politicians were calling “military aims” and “nazis”.

I am Ukrainian
I am devastated and broken as my family and friends and all Ukrainians woke to war this morning. In the middle of Europe. With a silent fearful agreement of the EU and the rest of the world who could have prevented this by confident actions, not only talks and condolence.
As an artist I was never on the "dark side", my works are aimed to bring light, joy, thoughtfulness, even these horrible events cannot push me to create something as dark as my current state of mind and soul, even if I want to. I am not asking to support me, but if you want, I am eager to provide any information I have about the current state of affairs in Ukraine, as well as validated links for donations. Informational support and demonstration are also needed now. Please, don't keep silent and distant. This plague can invade your house if you don't act.
Thank you for support!
