The Path In To the Painting
Jelena Papovic
Sometime in the early '80. in an old Mediterranean town called Budva, a young girl dreams about distant worlds, journeys, circus tents, the trapeze, acrobats, fire eaters and walking on the tightrope.
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL!
Nothing has really become of all of those dreams until now. The world is still big and she is about to conquer it.
Little Jelena did not realize that it is possible to conquer the world by painting.
She sketches using her imagination (some of these sketches still exist) and she hopes that one beautiful day a circus will arrive in the old town of Budva and she will leave with them as one of the acrobats to a far away world.
These dreams are not typical of a small girl living by the sea neither of a small boy, as they dream about the sea, ships and distant lands.
Jelena lives by the sea but dreams about the circus and draws strange fish, dolphins, octopuses, sea urchins and star fish, and she grows up.
Jelena PapovicShe learns to play the piano, grows up even more and realizes life is very complicated and that the circus will not have a great influence on her further journey.
After school, Jelena's dreams of a long journey come partly true. She moves to Belgrade to continue her education and temporarily leaves the sea behind her. The further she is from the sea, however, the more it churns inside her.
Jelena dreams of the old town, storms, and dolphins all the time she is in windy Belgrade.
She finishes her studies in Cetinje and finally realizes that all her later journeys: trips to Venice and some other big cities are not as important as the journey inside her, the journey through painting.
Her fascination with the human form which since early childhood was connected to the circus and her great love of the sea floods from her on to the canvas and directly to the outside world.
Music which she enjoys through rhythm and dance finds its place more and more in the rhythm of her paintings.

The moment when the divers body hits the water.
Bodies frozen in whiteness and heated in the darkness.
