Ivonne Chia is a contemporary Chilean artist known for her evocative and introspective work that explores the concept of space and memory. Her art features vast, almost giant-like spaces that invite viewers to interpret the continuous changes inherent in life. Chia’s artistic process is unique; she does not draw directly on the matrix but engages with the materials in a more instinctive manner. The wooden plank serves as a canvas where she slides and glides, capturing the essence of her daily perceptions. Similarly, with metal plates, she transforms the matrix, drawing from deep-seated memories that resonate within her.
Chia intentionally refrains from titling her works, allowing the audience to participate in the discovery and creation of meaning within her pieces. This approach encourages a personal connection and interpretation, inviting viewers to engage with her art on a more profound level.
Ivonne Chia has participated in numerous collective exhibitions since 1991, showcasing her work in various print competitions, biennials, and triennials across the globe, including countries such as Chile, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, the USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, France, England, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Morocco, the UAE, Egypt, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. In addition to her group exhibitions, she has held solo exhibitions, including “Engravings” at the Engraving Plaza Mulato Gil Gallery in Santiago, Chile, in 1996, and “Engravings” at Astoreca Palace in Iquique, Chile, in 1997.
Over her career, Chia has received several prestigious awards. In 1996, she received an Honorary Mention in the National Art Concourse: Painting and Engraving “Concepción, una ciudad en movimiento” in Concepción, Chile. In 2005, she participated in the Nagasawa Art Park Artist in Residence program focused on Japanese Woodblock Printmaking in Awajishima, Hyogo, Japan, and was awarded an Honor Diploma at the Sixth Edition of the “Iosif Iser” International Contemporary Engraving Biennial in Ploiesti, Romania. Through her work, Ivonne Chia continues to explore the intersections of memory, space, and perception, inviting audiences to embark on their own journeys of discovery within her art.
