L'artista lavora sempre sul suo soggetto preferito, il paesaggio. Preferisce la pittura in studio in quanto gli consente di concentrarsi su pezzi vivaci e colorati ma allo stesso tempo rilassanti. Oakes è anche un istruttore d'arte, insegnando corsi di pittura e workshop in una varietà di media.
