Zhang trae infinita ispirazione dagli animali, che sono i soggetti principali dei suoi dipinti. Avendo sempre avuto animali domestici, attualmente vive con due gatti e un'anatra. Osservare quotidianamente i suoi animali la porta a credere in un mondo magico e nascosto al loro interno, un concetto che intende catturare nella sua arte. Crea i suoi dipinti collezionando immagini di animali, tra cui fotografie dei suoi animali domestici e di altre piccole creature che incontra, e poi espandendo queste associazioni nel suo lavoro.
I suoi dipinti sono noti per la loro luminosità, vivacità e natura spesso stravagante, con elementi antropomorfi che mettono in risalto i tratti carini e affascinanti degli animali.
