Jean-Marie Virat è un fotografo che pratica la fotografia da oltre 25 anni. Dal cinema fino alla fine degli anni 90, passa al digitale negli anni 2000. Dal 2008 al 2009 la sua attività fotografica assume un ritmo più sostenuto.
Quasi autodidatta, ha frequentato per un anno (1999-2000) un corso presso la Città di Parigi e ha partecipato ad alcuni stage. Nel 2014 decide di proporre una prima mostra. Da allora ne ha realizzati diversi.
Il suo lavoro è essenzialmente a colori, urbano e grafico, anche se pratica anche quella che viene chiamata street art, scene di strada. Anche in questo caso l'organizzazione grafica crea l'atmosfera. Le linee strutturano le sue fotografie e offrono un ritmo alla loro lettura.
“Scatta” principalmente in città, a Parigi e durante i suoi viaggi, con un particolare affetto per l'Asia. I suoi maestri: soprattutto un pittore, Paul Klee. E nella foto, Saul Leiter e Harry Gruyaert.
Un tema attraversa i periodi: le facciate. Con una grafica e un'inquadratura meticolose, cerca di trasmettere la loro poesia, la loro musica. Paragona queste opere a composizioni per le quali avremmo privilegiato i ritmi. Più in generale, rimane affascinato dalle superfici piane. Con le sue pareti espositive mature ha cercato di raccontare il tempo che passa sulle pareti.
