the inspiration for the works came from a sense of suffocation, of a condition of the absence of oxygen, from this starting point the works evolved, both as a representation of such a condition and as an attempt to explore a way through such a context. In many cases the artist sees the creation of his paintings as a process one which provides an avenue for transformation of a state of being. The artist has used a variety of materials to create the paintings, working on wood and canvas, often inserting items and images from his own personal history or from nature. He has used a range of mixed mediums combined with various techniques of collage which give many of the works and aged aura. In a number of the works there are fragments of objects and traces of places and figures, which evoke a sense of the past and of loss. While at the same time the paintings have a recurring tension in them between, spaces of light and darkness. A black void, an immovable blot marks its presence in many of the works imposing itself on the paintings an intrusion on what appears to be a scene from the past or a memory of a mood or dream. Although the black form is non-representational it is suggestive of the suffocation that the artist experiences. In many ways therefore with his series of new works the artist explores his relationship between his past, present and future.
