Stimulating fantasy – providing open mental and emotional space - seduces the viewer into subconsciously experiencing archetypical associations - an invitation to widen your perspective - …these are some statements given by visitors at several occasions lately.
As a young boy spending time in Egypt, later in Milan, growing up in Vienna, all this led him into a life of creating art. Talented for music just as well as for visual art, Heribert Wagner is one of a few.
As he recently stated in an interview: “My art is about emotions and humanism, but also about our world today and politics. Whatever goes through my mind at the time streams into the act of creating the artwork at hand in togetherness of body and soul, spontaneously shaping the motions of my tools, deciding what to use, a certain brush or a painting knife or otherwise. The colours, the composition, in those moments undisturbed, in full devotion and concentration it all streams together into one work of art. Whenever I feel it asks for particular fine-tuning …” then Wagner invokes his craftsmanship to explicitly work out the finest details, in abstraction or in realistic associations surfacing here and there in his paintings, always balanced towards the meaning of the words Fine Art.
“While working on the series “Dark Matter – The Terra Nera Paintings”, the uncomprehendable was the thing, my thoughts circling around the scientific exploration of the universe leading straight into CERN, smallest conceivable particles clashing into each other to learn more about bosons and the missing link to the existence of dark matter. Humanism, devotion, empathy, these are often missing links between people and nations. Can it help us if we focus on infinity micro- or macro-? If just sometimes but regularly we all take a “snapshot”, allowing yourself a short moment of universal consciousness, we can better put life in perspective… make it a habit!

Music: several jazz groups, festivals, radio and tv performances throughout Europe, composer for symphonic orchestra and soloist in his own composition “Gaia, a Story for Jazzgroup and Symphony Orchestra” with Het Gelders Orkest, Arnhem/NL, New Association and conductor Taijiro Iimori, edited by Donemus, Amsterdam.
Education: Academy for Applied Arts, Vienna: architecture with Prof. Janeba.
Conservatories: Vienna (1971-74) and Enschede (1979-83)
Heribert Wagner lives and works since 1978 in the Netherlands.

Last July I was able to visit the places of the earthquakes in central Italy. What I saw struck me deeply, and I felt the need to work on this issue, to process my dismay and to help not to forget those places and their (former) inhabitants. By the permission of the Mayor Sergio Pirozzi, I could get into the red zone of Amatrice accompanied by a fireman, to take photographs and to collect some materials.
The exhibition "Onde" (waves) was already hosted by several towns of the province of Rieti, including Casaprota, Casperia, Montasola, Toffia, Torrita Tiberina and Poggio Mirteto. Pieces of wood, a shirt, toys, sand and stones are some of the materials I collected in the rubble of the earthquake in Central Italy - and I used them for the works brought together in a travelling exhibition dedicated to the theme of the destruction of the earthquakes. In one of the pictures you will see a page of a calendar, with handwritten notes until 24 August 2016, along with a piece of tar, a toy sword and an envelope of a local rally. Even documents of the commune of Amatrice like a permit to build a small shed on the burial grounds. Those works, made with a mix of photography, painting and collage, are for sale and 75 percent of the revenue will go to charity to associations of the earthquake zone. In Casaprota, a small town in the Sabina mountains, Wagner, musician in addition to painter, was artist in residence at the Palazzo del Gatto of the Association Sabinarti.
"The day after the visit to the places of the earthquake - and after a long sleep - I started working right away. Memory evoked an image of two floors compressed under a roof on top, under the blue sky of Amatrice. I cut the canvas and mounted a piece of a real shirt, ripped and still with the buttons. The sand and stones on paintings add to the experience of reality. I decided to use the collected materials in my artworks and take them as well into the hearts and minds of visitors. The reality of all this destruction -explains the artist- can be felt only by seeing real results, as if one would really be standing there in front of all the buried belongings of all those people - only thus one can relive the feelings related to what happened. I also went to Illica, part of the Commune Accumoli: I had seen a documentary about this tiny village on TV, it had been completely destroyed, except for a farmhouse where the farmer still lived on caring for his cows. That was when I decided to create this project. Alessandra, a resident who lost her house, gave me a piece of wood that belonged to her mother's chair..."
