C’est en 1946, à l’âge de 15 ans, qu’Harold Feinstein se lance dans la photographie. Quatre ans plus tard, Edward Steichen, alors conservateur du Museum of Modern Art de New York, lui achète l’une de ses photographies et fait de lui le plus jeune photographe à intégrer la collection permanente du musée. Membre de la Photo League aux côtés de Sid Grossman dès l’âge de 17 ans, et figure importante de l’avant garde new-yorkaise de la photographie de rue, il expose à la Limelight Gallery d’Helen Gee et contribue à la conception des Blue Note Records. Il est l’un des habitants originels du légendaire « Jazz Loft », à New York, où il rencontre W. Eugene Smith, collaborant avec lui activement sur la maquette du fameux Pittsburg Project. Exposées pour la première fois en 1954, au Whitney Museum of American Art, les photographies d’Harold Feinstein font depuis longtemps partie de prestigieuses collections privées et de collections permanentes de grands musées américains, tels que le Museum of Modern Art, l’International Center of Photography, le Museum of Photographic Arts ou encore le Musée de la Ville de New York. Digne représentant de la “New York School of Photography”, Harold Feinstein étend son œuvre sur près de six décennies, période pendant laquelle il va s’évertuer à faire le portrait intime d’une Amérique exubérante et pleine de vitalité.
