Professor Gediminas Jokubonis (1927 – 2006)
People's artist of the ex USSR, Lenin Prize Winner, Academic of the ex Soviet Union's (now Russia) Art Academy since 1983, Professor.
Gediminas Jokubonis was born 1927 in Kupiskis, Lithuania. In 1952 he graduated from the Lithuanian State Art Institute where he had studied under Professor Juozas Mikenas. Since 1965 he has been teaching sculpture at the same Institute (he became a Professor in 1974). Simultaneously, the Sculptor was engaged in creative activities and he has participated in Republic and ex Soviet Union Exhibitions as well as International ones since 1954. After winning the competition for a monument to victims of fascism in Pirciupis village, Gediminas Jokubonis in 1960 created a monumental ensemble consisting of the sculpture entitled Mother and a memorial wall in relief with the names of those who perished. The ensemble is one of the most significant achievements in ex Soviet Monumental Art. The Author was awarded for it the Republic's State Prize (in 1960), the Soviet Union's Art Academy silver Medal (in 1961) and finally, the Lenin Prize (in 1963).
Participant of art exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad since 1954. Member of international jury in competitions: for creating monument to Khan Asparuch, Founder of Bulgaria, Sofia, Bulgaria, 1969; 3rd International Smal Plastic Artwork Biennal, Budapest, Hungary, 1975; Australian National Portrait Competition, Sidney, Australia, 1988; for creating monument to P. Tchaikovsky, St. Peterburg, Russia, 1992.
Erected monuments to: Kipras Petrauskas, Vilnius, 1974; Maironis, Kaunas, 1977; Adam Mickiewicz, Vilnius, 1984; Antanas Vienazindis, Mazeikiai, 1987; Vytautas Magnus riders figure, Birstonas 1998, Antanas Baranauskas, Seinai (Poland), 1999; and more. Created many portraits, designed tombstones, and medals.
Was nominated as a Person of the Year by USA Biography Institute, 1998. Was awarded Order Cross for the Merits to the Republic of Poland, Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas 3rd Degree Order Bearer… And more awards.
Wife: Brone Valantinaite - Jokuboniene; Children: daughter Egle, son Tomas, son Julius.
