In medieval Switzerland, part of the regions was actually ruled by the Austrian imperial house of the Habsburgs. Among them was the Uri mountain canton, covered with forests and glaciers. The Habsburgs dreamed of capturing all of Switzerland in order to control all flows of money and goods passing through it. They put cruel governors at the head of the captured areas. On the main square of the capital of the canton, the town of Altdorf, a protege of the Habsburgs, a certain Heinrich Gessler, erected a pillar, and on top of it he placed his hat with a feather. All passers-by had to bow before this symbol of power. Wilhelm Tell, a hunter with an excellent bow, arrived in the town with his son Walter and, walking through the central square, either out of absentmindedness or out of pride, did not perform this ritual. Immediately, the guards seized him and brought him to Gessler. He threatened to execute both and demanded that Tell hit an apple placed on the head of his son with an arrow, then they would be released.

Wilhelm Tell agreed. He fired this shot, and hit exactly the apple. But the guards discovered that the shooter was holding a second arrow at the ready under his cloak. When asked why, he openly said that in case of a mistake, he intended to send it directly to the heart of Gessler. The shooter was arrested and sent on a longboat across Lake Lucerne to the castle, where he was to be imprisoned. However, a storm broke out on a large lake, and the guards freed Tell from the shackles so that he, also known as an experienced navigator, could save them from the storm. But, bringing the longboat to the shore, Tell jumped into the water and then disappeared into the forest. He decided to take revenge on the local tyrant. For three days, the shooter waited for Gessler by the road leading through the mountain pass to Zurich, and finally met the ruler riding on a horse. Calling out to him so as not to shoot on the sly, Tell with a well-aimed arrow struck the hated protege of the Habsburgs.

Learning about all this, in January 1308, the people of the three cantons - Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden - revolted and soon drove out the foreigners. And Tell became Switzerland's national hero, a symbol of its freedom.
