The image shows Christopher Columbus under a threatening sky, such as those that he had to look up to, when, in an almost endless journey, in harsh conditions, and quite possibly, filled with doubts, he crossed the great Atlantic Ocean for the first time in history. In addition to abandoning his roots for an indefinite period, it blew against him a common idea, since the success of the journey would be the irrefutable proof of a diametrically different conception of space: that Earth was not flat but round.

Columbus’ stance in this statue (Jeronimo Suñol and Arturo Mélida, 1885) seems the perfect resting place for a white-bellied sea eagle. There is also a tiny bird, seeking shelter from the spectacular eagle in the discoverer’s footwear.

Who knows if Columbus, along with the knowledge and tools he used on his legendary journey, did not keep a carefully guarded secret, such as the presence of a white-bellied sea eagle who, with an excellent vision and guided by a superior power, indicated the way forward in search of the promised land.

La imagen muestra a Cristóbal Colón bajo un cielo amenazante, como los que debió de sortear cruzando por primera vez en la historia el gran océano Atlántico, en una travesía casi interminable, en condiciones durísimas, y puede que también llena de dudas. Además de abandonar sus raíces durante tiempo indefinido, soplaba en su contra una opinión generalizada, dado que el éxito de su viaje supondría la prueba irrefutable de una concepción del espacio diametralmente distinta: que la Tierra no era plana sino redonda.

La postura de Colón en esta estatua (Jerónimo Suñol y Arturo Mélida, 1885) parece el lugar perfecto de reposo para un “águila marina de tripa blanca”. Se observa también, cobijado en el calzado del descubridor, un pajarillo que se resguarda de la espectacular rapaz.

Quién sabe si Colón, junto con el conocimiento y las herramientas que utilizase en su legendario viaje, no contaría con algún secreto cuidadosamente guardado, como la presencia de un águila marina de tripa blanca que, con una excelente visión y guiada por un poder superior, le indicara el camino a lo largo de su hazaña en busca de la tierra deseada.
