The Ferrari 250 GTO is a Gran Turismo class car that Ferrari manufactured from 1962 to 1964 to participate in the FIA ​​GT3 races.

The first part of the name indicates the volume of each cylinder in cubic centimeters, and the second part - an abbreviation of "Gran Turismo Omologata", which in Italian means "Car, allowed to race"

The new GTO cost $ 18,000 (in the US), and Enzo Ferrari and his representative in North America, Luigi Chinetti, had to approve the buyer personally.

In the period from 1962 to 1963, 36 cars were produced. In 1964, the “second series” was introduced, the appearance of which was slightly changed. Only three of these were produced, and a new body was delivered to the four old models, which brought the total number of cars produced to 39.

In 2004, Sports Car International magazine placed the 250 GTO in eighth place in the list of "The Best Cars of the 60s", and Motor Trend Classic magazine called it "the best Ferrari ever released."

In August 2018, the rare red Ferrari 250 GTO was sold for $ 48.4 million at Sotheby’s. The vehicle was put up for sale by former Microsoft employee Greg Whitten.
