Everett Spruill
An African American painter, photographer, and print-maker. Born Birmingham, Alabama USA. Everett Spruill attended Berea College, where he majored in Business. It was during this time that he painted watercolor paintings of landscapes and portraits in the tradition of the French Impressionist, but did not seriously entertain the idea of a career in the arts. While managing a Hotel in Miami, and with frequent visits to the Miami Museum, a Picasso exhibition changed his outlook as he was inspired by the simplicity and geometric patterns that formed the images. After relocating to Orlando, Spruill took up painting seriously and it was at this time that he created The "Old School Jazz and Blues" series of paintings and collages, inspired by the art of Romare Bearden. From that time on Spruill consistently created increasingly complex variations of art from recycled and re-purposed materials focusing on Jazz as a central theme. Spruill constantly challenges himself to source new materials and expand his resources. His first radical shift came in 1999, with the "Tribal Rhythms Series" in which he employs interlocking geometric shapes combined with graffiti techniques. It was around this time as well that he created his first prints in screen printing, linoleum cuts, and offset lithography. During the following decade, Spruill introduced texture into his art, which he came to call "Nuvo-stained glass" for its transparent qualities. From the mid-1990s to 2010, Spruill created a large body of work that responded in a general way to the childlike simplicity of creating art. During this time, the increasingly abstract collages of Spruill's paintings gave way to a multitude of materials from electronic components, textiles, recycled wallpaper, and decorative architectural elements. To create these works, the artist uses recycled and repurposed materials and digital technologies. In 2017, Spruill began making wire sculptures and developing architectural projects. Still residing in Orlando Florida with his many accolades, Everett's prints and paintings are most famous for his work in the areas of collage and cubist abstraction. Spruill's work is in public and private collections worldwide, including The Kia Center - Orlando Fl. , Disney World, The City of Orlando, and The Media Institute to name a few.

Everett Spruill was born in Birmingham, Alabama. After attending High School at George Washington Carver, in Birmingham, Alabama, Everett went to Berea College, where he majored in business. Everett was exposed to museums, and classical music at an early age and would prove to have a great influence on his artistic development.
For more than 20 years Everett, a self-taught artist, has been involved in collecting and creating works of art. He currently conducts art workshops for Central Florida youth and is former owner of The Ethnic Art Gallery, Orlando, Florida.
Everett is most known for his early collages and works on paper, notably, the "Old School Jazz and Blues Series", which feature colorful images of the fathers and legends of our own American art form….Jazz. Everett is influenced by American Artists Arthur Rayford, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Charles White and Frank Stella to name a few.
Article
My creations have been categorized as Contemporary, Abstract Mixed Media and Paintings. I have three styles and use a variety of found objects, including, shells, magazine pages, tissue, postage stamps, paint, photographs, cut and torn hand-painted paper, air-brushed, drawings, and computer manipulated images. The theme and inspiration for most of my creations is Music (Jazz and Blues), African Cultures and the African-American Experience, and most of all “Family”.
As a self-taught artist my techniques are the result and combination of extensive experimentation and from studying works of great contemporary masters. I always focus on the importance of drawing, composition, tone and mixing colors in each creation.
Most of my creations begin with photographs or several thumbnail sketches. Harmony and contrast are essential for everything I produce and it becomes even more important in the works I call “Intuitive Creation” (Mindscapes, Tribal Rhythms and Middle Passages Series) because these images
are created mainly by letting go of conscience thoughts and relying more on instinct. Because the steps are intuitive and emotional rather than cognitive, many times the exact processes are forgotten, the end result is sometimes difficult to repeat.
