Born in 1966 in Lahore to a working class family, Abid Khan started practical life early when he began helping his father, who was an optician, after the school hours. Being a below-average student, his studies could never interest him. Drawing school charts and learning an optician’s skills were among his major interests. He continued working at his father’s shop until he earned his Masters degree in English literature in 1993.
With a passion to paint and draw, he kept on practicing on his own, as he lacked resources to have formal art education. In 1996, he met a senior painter, Khalid Iqbal, and showed him his works.
“Considering my seriousness, he agreed to guide me and that was the turning point in my life,” Khan recalls.
In 1999, he had his first solo show of cityscapes, executed with dry pastels. “Though it was well-received by the media and art circles, only one painting was sold at the show. I had a lot of pressure from my family to do something else to earn living,” he says, adding that the poor market response made him upset.
However, his father realised that any discouragement would add to his agony.
“My father changed his attitude and started helping me by giving me money to buy art materials. He would accompany to various spots in the city and sometimes sit beside me so that no one could disturb me while painting in the busy streets of Lahore,” he says.
“I started meeting established art figures to seek their guidance for my professional growth. Then someone advised me to concentrate on my work rather than running from pillar to post,” he said. He stopped socialising and focused on his work. The strategy worked for him.
“In 2001, I got married. The change helped a great deal in stabilising me emotionally, which is reflected through mellow colours and soft brushstrokes in my work,” he relates.
He continued displaying his works regularly in solo shows, winning appreciation and gradually having his share in the art market.
“I was producing a lot of works till 2004 when Quddus Mirza criticised me for being over ambitious. I took it seriously and changed my pace to produce mature and quality work,” he adds.
“The moment the stress caused by deadlines eased, I started making dialogue with the paintings and enjoying my work. This romantic approach improved the quality of my works,” he relates.
Inspired by the impressionist painters Monet and Van Gogh, he is working for more than 15 years with 10 solo shows to his credit. Popular for his delicately treated landscapes, he works with soft brushstrokes and mellow tones usually on low textured canvasses.
He also remained on the faculty of Naqsh School of Arts for a few months. “My enthusiastic approach towards teaching and giving attention to every student was not in accordance with their academic tempo, so I left teaching after working almost one year,” he says.
He is among the few Lahore-based artists working as whole-time painters. The works of Iqbal Hussain, Colin David and Khalid Iqbal have been his permanent sources of inspiration.

Words like terrorism, bloodshed and prejudice are ruling our lives but this is all due to electronic, print and social media; close your eyes you feel closer yourself to Mother Nature everywhere peace , love and harmony prevail depicting true picture of life. Painting or another form of expression is just a little stimulator for the mankind to come out of their self made shell of dignified identities. So I painted nothing but painting…….
No philosophy is required to understand art but we try to mould things in the shapes of intellectual and orthodox cal doctrines; to be appreciated or to be criticized but this is not the reality we are facing today. My painting is nothing or worthless if not beneficial for a common man who is concerned with his daily struggling life because there is no awareness in general public regarding art or painting but human beings are symbolic of love, peace and harmony. It may take hundred of years to realize this phenomenon of life but I strongly believe that my work that is not just depiction of simple landscapes; painted with devotion of my heart and soul is a ray of hope for the mankind.

This world is in the process of transition; things are getting new shapes but nature exists in its true spirit of purity and glory. I have shared my silent soul with the scenic landscape wonders of my land to find peace and tranquility.
I have tried to assert the superiority of imagination over reality on my canvases. This is not to say that my work is without intricacies, for i felt that even the darkest shadows are composed of almost imperceptible gradations of color and light but my canvases may leave some pleasant impressionistic traces of beauty and truth on you as John Keats says;
Beauty is truth, truth beauty

Pakistan is a land of colors beauty and talent. Life exists in its natural atmosphere and great exposure to withering mood of Mother Nature. Being a painter I love to live and work over here representing the true picture of this great land. I have absorbed the beauty of this land on the canvas of my imagination. Poverty and hardship in life boost up my spirit to do more better work. I take pride to be an ingredient and identity of great Pakistan. How lovely it is for a painter to live and paint without social discrimination on the basis of language, religion and region.
All the forms of art communicate less or more but a painting done with the purity of heart and soul can move this world emotionally and psychologically. I feel love, peace and harmony in romantic and classical dance of natural splendors ; songs of nightingale in spring, whispering breeze of summer, calm weather of winter and withering colors of autumn. What a wonderful piece of land on this planet of earth where human beings are struggling for bread and butter; imposing wars on other nations in the name of peace and making others fool by achieving their materialistic goals.
Me a painter doing nothing but presenting a true picture of Pakistan through tiny stocks of inspired brush in different layers of paint on my canvases. My paintings are the life, passion and pure excitement………that my sensitivity to penetrate your heart, one way or other.
It is right to enjoy this world, it is right to love God because He created it. I constantly look for the beauty, love and harmony around me in the city of gardens Lahore. Nature smiles at me when I passes by. She smiles at everyone who passes by her. She does not have discrimination. Love Nature, love life and give open hearted expressions to your emotions. whatever field of life your own.

To me that i felt very difficult to discuss visual language of my work but my paintings are far away from the pseudo values of artificiality and materialistic glamor. this world is in the process of transition; things are getting new shapes but nature exists in its true spirit of purity and glory. i have shared my silent soul with the scenic landscapic wonders of my land to find peace and tranquility.
i am not looking for beauty or glamor but emphasis more on originality and natural manifestation. i uses colors to reflect environment but also for the atmosphere that they represent. the multi hued misty moments with nature in my paintings gets viewer the feeling of being close to nature. i found solace in the open wild nature and endeavored to transform some of the scenes i absorbed in my mind at various locations on to the canvas.
My inspiration comes from the forgotten sacred environment and nature we turn our backs to on a daily basis, to modern and materialistic age of television, computers and video games. from a chilly misty morning blanketed with snow to a warm bright field, my work is a fresh clean slate to the eye , a myriad of colors completing the composition . so i want to impart my knowledge, my capabilities of sharing feelings genuinely.
