Erwin Olaf est né en 1959 et décède en 2023 au Pays-Bas. Il émerge sur la scène artistique internationale en 1988 avec sa série Chessmen récompensée par un premier prix au concours Young European Photographer. Consacré par de nombreuses expositions muséales à travers le monde, Olaf a célébré en 2019 ses 40 ans de carrière avec plusieurs rétrospectives majeures de son travail: au Gemeentemuseum et Fotomuseum de La Haye, au Shanghai Center of Photography, ainsi qu'au Rijksmuseum qui a fait entrer dans ses collections 500 pièces provenant des fonds d’atelier de l’artiste – tirages photographiques, vidéos, portfolios, livres – et couvrant l’ensemble de sa carrière. Il vit à Amsterdam.
