Original Artwork refers to any work that is considered authentic and not a copy or imitation of the original works of an artist. Original artwork can be any type of painting, sculpture, performance, or other media. There are many types of original media. Mixed media includes oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings. For workshop paintings that bear evidence of master craftsmanship, this attribution must be further qualified. This outstanding watercolor, by this Cuban Master, was done in 2012 as the original work for a print edition. She spent a tremendous amount of time on the detail, and the result is this rather spectacular masterpiece. It is unframed, and is a watercolor on thick paper.

Zaida del Rio (b. 1954, Guadalupe, Las Villas, Cuba) is one of Cuba's most respected living female artists today. Her works establish a link between the human body as a landscape and nature. She draws inspiration from her intense connection with mother nature to create a imaginary world where plants and trees merge with human figures that are characterized by their innate femininity. By applying abstraction, del Rio uses a visual vocabulary that addresses spirituality and hedonism.

Del Rio received her diploma in Fine Art from National School of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba, a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Superior Institute of Art in Havana, Cuba, and a Master in Fine Arts from the Ecole de Beaux in Paris, France. Her work has participated in all editions of the Biennial of Havana, Cuba and Biennales in Ecuador, Egypt, Brazil, Santo Domingo, and Japan. She has exhibited in solo exhibitions at Estudio los Oficios Gallery, Havana, Cuba; Gallery Via Larga, Florence, Italy; Gallery G, Barcelona, Spain and many other museums and galleries around the world. Her numerous group exhibitions include "Case Western Reserve" at Mather's University Gallery Cleveland, Ohio. Over the years, Del Rio has been honored with several awards including the Third Prize of Painting during the Biennial of Tenri Japan.

Watercolor

Watercolor is a painting in which gum arabic binds transparent pigments revealing the support of the painting. The gouache, of identical composition, is opaque. A watercolor is a water-based painting on paper. We rarely speak of a painting for a work painted in watercolor. Watercolor paintings are considered to be a unique way to creatively represent dreams, illusions, emotions and luminous feelings using water soluble pigments. However, painting with watercolors can be difficult. It's a difficult medium to master, in large part because it can be ruthless and unpredictable. Mistakes are difficult to correct and its fluid nature makes it difficult to control. Yet it is these very qualities that give the medium its undeniable charm.

Painting is an art form of painting on a surface by aesthetically applying colored fluids. Painters represent a very personal expression on supports such as paper, rock, canvas, wood, bark, glass, concrete and many other substrates. Work of representation or invention, painting can be naturalistic and figurative, or abstract. It can have narrative, descriptive, symbolic, spiritual, or philosophical content.
