These two colossal statues (about 20 meters high and weighting around 700 tones) are almost 3400 years old. They were built by the deified Pharaoh Amenhotep III and resemble the ruler of Egypt himself. Once, the gigantic statues were guarding the pharaoh's mortuary temple which now is completely destroyed.

These two colossal statues (about 20 meters high and weighting around 700 tones) are almost 3400 years old. After the northern statue was damaged by an earthquake, for some reason, it would emit strange sounds in the morning, possibly related to the heat of the sun or the humidity of the night.
Ancient Greeks tried to explain the sound and looked to the story of Memnon by Homer. Memnon was a hero of the Trojan War, a King of Ethiopia, who was killed by Achilles. According to the legend, after his death he reappeared in a statue in Thebes and cried every morning with the rising sun.
Later, in the Roman era, the upper tiers of sandstone were added and the sound vanished.
Today, the Colossi of Memnon are remainders of the glory years of Ancient Egypt under Amenhotep III.
