Úrsula San Cristóbal
I'm an interdisciplinary artist and researcher devoted to experimental music, performance art, video art and calligraphy. My artistic work proposes a meeting point between experimental music, performance art and video art, which I conceive as tools for exploring contemporary subjectivity, addressing issues such as gender, identity, fragility, eroticism, intimacy and affection.
I work by combining artisan elements, such as weaving and calligraphy, with low-cost digital technologies, such as home camcorders and free software. Through these elements, I propose a dialogue between ideas derived from the humanities and the materiality of artistic practice, trying to reconcile conceptual thinking with the sensoriality of the body.
As an artist and a researcher, I consider the application of humanities knowledge in the artistic creation, as a way to encourage reflection and awareness through aesthetic experience, because I think art is an invitation (or a provocation) to think and ask questions.

English description: How can we construct a sensitive body that explores its pleasure and its anatomy outside the conditioning of colonial patriarchy? What if we try to undo the rules imposed on our bodies and begin to "weave" our own subjectivity? These questions give rise to the piece Weaving a Body, an étude on the exploration and transformation of the body through weaving, which tries to evoke its tactile properties in an audiovisual way. Weaving is a practice that requires time, dedication and patience, necessary attributes to establish affective ties with those around us, and also to build ourselves as beings with our own ideas, feelings and desires. The fibers evoke a slowly developing tactility, open to continuous transformation and experimentation, important characteristics for radically rethinking our bodies. Through weaving, performance and video art, this project explores the performative possibilities of a body that seeks its emotional and erotic expressiveness, through tactile imagination. A body open to the continuous exploration of its own anatomy and its environment. A body that faces its fragility and its strength, at times disturbing and strange, but always desirous of life.

La memoria de un oído (The Memory of an Ear, 2018)
What is memory made of? Stories, memories, fictions, images and sounds clinging to our skin .... The memory of an ear is a music-visual reflection inspired by Paul Ricoer and Leonor Arfuch’s approaches on memory. The texts narrated by the author are a personal reflection on the relationship between memory and sound.

According to a medieval legend, in 1345 a mysterious light would have fascinated the citizens of Manresa (Catalonia, Spain). For his medieval eyes light was much more than an optical phenomenon, it was the focus of philosophical, mystical and metaphysical reflections. Light was considered the origin of life and the principle of all beauty. The low tech video art piece "That mysterious light", proposes a dialogue with medieval thought that invites us to ponder about the role of light in our current lives, in a context characterised by excessive energy consumption. Through sound and visual textures, the relationship between light, nature and thought is explored. Work commissioned by the Festival Ponts de Llum Manresa in 2018.
