Tem algumas técnicas inovadoras, tais como: pinta com berbequim sobre tela com vários materiais (pinceis, bonecas de polir, lixas gastas, etc.); pinta com as telas ou papéis dentro de água; coloca tintas a óleo em panelas ao lume e pinta; pinta com as técnicas do gotejamento e do vazamento em vários processos inovadores; mistura tintas acrílicas com lixívia e pinta; fogo por de trás das telas e pinta; pinta com as patas dos animais; enterra telas pintadas durante uns dias e depois trabalhas; pinta com e sobre lixa; pinta com a boca com vários materiais; pinta com várias partes de seu corpo; pinta com carros telecomandados; pinta á chuva; utiliza uma infinidade de materiais para substituir os pinceis; etc.

Sei que Urbano da Cruz está travando consigo própria uma dolorosa luta para vencer as suas, e afinal nossas limitações, pelos caminhos da Arte porque neste artista e em tudo o que faz sente-se amor e verdade. Amor na procura pessoal e até no apoio que dá aos amigos. Mesmo aos que mal conhece. E é essa generosidade de dávida sem contrapartida que ele quer transportar para a tela. Sim, o amor também e imaginação e poder e poder criativo e o Universo foi um gesto infinito da força infinita de amor.
Urbano sabe que como a trovoada quando a Arte nos parece tão perto e realizável está afinal tão longe que nos obriga a recomeçar numa procura interminável. E que nos isola abandonando-nos numa ilha de falsos onirismos de onde muitas vezes é difícil distinguir a miragem da realidade.
Há sempre o medo de não conseguirmos sair de nós próprios não mostrando o que nos vai na alma e o que temos de melhor para dar.
Somos dúvidas e o prazer da cor torna-se o negro do drama, angústia de uma tela branca, nua, espacialmente enorme na sua agressividade. E quando partimos para o Universo da cor que ultrapassa a própria forma das coisas sem outro desejo que não seja reencontramo-nos na humanidade e colocamos a alma num espaço do mundo muito para além das nossas desilusões, expectativas e medos encontramos o Urbano da Cruz e a sua luta. Ele sabe a valência das cores, tem a noção estética do equilíbrio e a coragem da insatisfação. É essa procura de se chegar mais além que um dia nos dará o amargo fruto que se colhe verde para amadurecer na árvore do espírito livre desta nossa cultura massificada.

Depois de uma conversa com Urbano, faço uma pequena apreciação sobre sua obra.
Não seguindo as regras dos manuais de pintura Urbano segue o manual da sua memória e da sua vontade de querer experimentar e fazer coisas diferentes. Em que os sinais, como ele diz, sempre o influenciaram desde criança, sobressaem em todo o complexo mundo que pinta. A sua escrita plástica reflecte histórias que ele quer contar a si próprio ou momentos de comunicação com o seu Eu. Escrita complexa, pois quase só ele a entende como original ideia, em que o outro, pode divagar sem limites na complexa criação deste artista. Sua obra provoca uma indiferença, desconcertação e desconsolação a quem olha. Muitas das vezes, á primeira vista não se gosta, depois de a observar sente-se que afinal é uma obra diferente, bela, deleitosa, positiva, com bastante interesse, etc.

Escrever sobre o artista plástico e o ser humano pode ser tão complexo como a sua paleta de cores que se confunde com o arco-íris que muitos gostavam de alcançar.
Urbano da Cruz nasceu em Moçambique, um país africano com uma identidade especial. Teve uma infância e uma vida influenciada por experiências e conhecimentos do mundo oriental, africano e europeu, o que marcou de forma indelével a sua admirável sensibilidade. Vive em Portugal desde os seus dezassete anos e tornou-se um homem de princípios e valores universais que se encontram na beleza das coisas simples da vida, que o Mestre Urbano tão bem simboliza através do seu carácter, da sua forma de ser e de estar, do seu trabalho, da sua obra. E foi assim que nos conquistou e que nos conheceu, já lá vão uns bons anos. O ser humano envolvente, afectuoso, disponível, aparentemente frágil e sensível, é movido por uma enorme determinação e uma capacidade de sonhar sem limites, quase pluripotencial... tal como acontece quando somos crianças.
