I have taken inspiration from the poem "The New Colossus," by Emma Lazarus, which is engraved on a bronze plaque at the Statue of Liberty monument in New York City. Originally conceived as a symbol of the friendship between France and the United States, and a sign of their mutual desire for freedom, over the years the Statue has become a universal emblem of independence throughout the world, embodying hope and opportunity as it welcomes millions of immigrants seeking a better life. After studying in the States and having spent much time there in subsequent years, I have given much thought to the issue of liberty, and what it means to truly be free. Although different cultures have varied ideas of what freedom is, to me the concept of absolute autonomy has always seemed unattainable. Being a part of a civilized society requires that a person must cooperate with others, and have concern for how others feel, while being free means that a person can say or act anyway that they want, without regard for others. Therefore freedom always has limitations, and "absolute freedom" is a utopia that can never truly exist. Regardless, the outright elusiveness of freedom does not deter anyone from embarking upon its pursuit, and it is this odyssey that defines and shapes us.
