"A translucent style or experiment for an artist with strong nerves.”
In 1989, at the age of 20 years, I first used the original technique for the graphic cycle of works "Mystical images". A detailed contour image of the composition was drawn on the surface of the rough sheet of paper. The reverse side of the draft sheet was streaked with graphite and transferred along the contour to the main working surface of the drawing paper stretched on the tablet. Dry ink, in briquettes, dissolved in a small amount of water and then, on top of the contour drawing, was polished with light strokes of a thin brush. Between the strokes of each layer was left a small gap, which was filled with strokes of the next layer. Thus, even in the dark areas of each work and after several dozens of successive glazes tone always looked airy. The feature of the technique is a lot of care with the modeling of forms on the lights, since the one-two stroke of the wrong tone can ruin the almost finished work, and attempt to make corrections using the eraser hopelessly spoil the texture of the paper. The work is quite laborious, and each small composition took up to several months of daily hours of work. I liked to work from night to morning, to remain a minimum of external stimuli and maximum concentration. I am sure that such experiments can be allowed only at a young age, so whenever another customer widely opens his eyes in surprise, hearing the prices for the composition of this cycle, I am pleased to offer to make the author's repetition in a simpler technique.
