Art project "URBAN WINTER 32" was created by married couple of independent film directors - Sashko and Darina Balabai.

Sashko and Darina have been engaged in the implementation of contemporary film and art projects since 2015. Film and photo works by Sashko and Darina represent Ukraine at festivals and competitions around the world, receive awards and recognition.                            The “URBAN WINTER 32” project is an artistic search for authors, experimentation and realization of certain reflections on the environment. The play of shadows and lights on a snowy background, spectacular silhouettes and mystical story finds all inspired the creation of the project. The photographic works that make up the exposition resemble graphic sketches of coal pencil on white paper - at first glance, it seems to be the result of deep post-processing, but this effect was achieved through experiments with foreshortenings, light and snow, natural background.

The authors are convinced that winter in the urban space only seems dull and gray, but in the winter, everything becomes more authentic, as if naked and open to awareness. Winter in the city is a period dominated by colors such as white and black. This is a time when the lack of unnecessary details makes it possible to see new shapes and outlines in a familiar street environment. Also, through this art project, the authors draw visitors' attention to the environmental problems in the world around us. Manufacturers of drying machines are interested in the mass sale of such equipment and are not interested in the environmental friendliness of production and conservation of natural resources. The authorities of many European cities forbid to hang clothes on balconies and courtyards of houses, considers it not aesthetic and unnecessary. But due to recent research into the general situation in our hyper-technical and extra modern  world, drying our laundry naturally, using the energy of the sun and wind, is an effective means of preserving the environment.

"We started the project this winter, which was quite snowy and sometimes seemed too long. In search of interesting frames, we paid attention to the unusual outlines, silhouettes and shadows against the background of snow. It was especially interesting to take pictures when the snow was falling, we tried to capture these moments of inviolability. That is why the white floor is beneath your feet.

Further, after looking at thousands of photos taken during the winter months, we stopped at 32 pieces - a symbol of that long winter that will never end. And the main question we are facing is how to convey our winter feelings to the viewer. Our childhood memories have already worked here. As a child, Sashko and I lived on the ground floor, and laundry was usually hung in the yards of our homes - from there, such a huge drying place arose. The clothes that hang between the paintings are part of the usual everyday environment, among which art images are viewed. All we have to do is to find them. ”

Арт проект «URBAN WINTER 32» создала супружеская пара львовских независимых кинорежиссеров - Сашко и Дарина Балабай.

Проект «URBAN WINTER 32» - это художественный поиск авторов, эксперимент и реализация определенных рефлексий на окружение. Игра тени и света на снежном фоне, эффектные силуэты и мистические сюжетные находки - все это вдохновило на создание проекта. Фотоработы, из которых состоит экспозиция, напоминают графические зарисовки угольным карандашом на белой бумаге - с первого взгляда кажется, что это результат глубокой постобработки, но такого эффекта авторы достигли путем экспериментов с ракурсами, светом и снегом, естественным фоном.

Авторы уверены, что зима в урбанистическом пространстве только кажется печальной и серой, на самом деле, зимой все становится более настоящим, словно обнаженным и открытым для понимания. Зима в городе - это период, когда доминируют такие цвета, как белый и черный. Это то время, когда отсутствие лишних деталей дает возможность увидеть новые формы и очертания в привычном уличном окружении.                                                                Этим арт проектом авторы привлекают внимание зрителей к проблемам с экологией в окружающем нас мире. Производители сушильных машин заинтересованы в массовой продаже подобного оборудования и не заинтересованы в экологичности производства и сохранении природных ресурсов. Власти многих европейских городов запрещает вывешивать белье на балконах и во дворах домов, считает это неэстетичным и ненужным. Но в свете последних исследований ситуации, которая сложилась в нашем гипертехничном и сверхсовременном мире - сушить белье природным способом, используя энергию солнца и ветра - это отличное средство сохранения окружающей среды.

«Проект мы начали этой зимой, которая была достаточно снежной и иногда казалась слишком длинной. В поисках интересных кадров мы обратили внимание на необычные очертания, силуэты и тени на фоне снега. Особенно интересно было делать фотографии, когда снег только выпадал, мы пытались поймать именно эти моменты нетронутости. Отсюда - белый пол под вашими ногами.

Далее, после просмотра тысячи фотографий, сделанных в течение зимних месяцев, мы остановились на количестве 32 штуки - это символ той долгой зимы, которая никак не закончится. И главный вопрос, который стал перед нами - как передать наши зимние ощущение зрителю. Вот здесь уже сработали наши детские воспоминания. Мы в детстве жили на первом этаже, и выстиранное белье обычно вывешивалась во дворах наших домов - отсюда возникла такая огромная сушка. Одежда, висящая между картин, это часть повседневного окружения, среди которого просматриваются художественные образы. Надо только захотеть их найти».
