Manuel Lima was born in Niza, Alentejo, on the 10th of June 1911. As a child, he showed a talent for the Visual Arts. Attends high school in Coimbra. Later, he attended the Superior School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where his masters were Simões de Almeida (nephew), Luciano Freire, Veloso Salgado, Henrique Franco and Varela Aldemira. Finishes the Superior Painting Course with a classification of 18 out of 20.

Very young (1926) he won first prize in a national competition for a poster. It was the precedent of many others: “Miguel Ângelo Lupi” award; “Silver Medal” from the National Society of Fine Arts, “Gustavo Cordeiro Ramos Prize” (1983) - also awarded by the National Society of Fine Arts—with the painting “Merchant of Illusions”; “Correio da Manhã Prize” (1984), with the painting “Maternity”.

He was present at group exhibitions. Among others, at Salão Bobone, in Lisbon (1931/32); at Galeria Espaço, in Évora (1932); in another art exhibition, in Lisbon (1935); at the Holiday Aesthetic Mission, in Tomar (1937); in yet another exhibition at the Jerónimos Monastery, of which he was the organizer (1979); at the S. Francisco Gallery (1981/84); at the Palácio dos Corruchéus (1980/86); at the Estoril Casino Art Gallery (1990); at the Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital (1991).

In 1932 he began to exhibit—and will continue to do so regularly for 20 years or more—with the “Group of Portuguese Artists”.

He had participated, at the invitation of José Tagarro, in the “Salão dos Independentes”, organized by that Painter. Much more recently, in 1992, he participated in the First Exhibition of Artists from Alentejo, held at the Municipality of S. Tiago de Cacém.

He is represented at the Museum of Contemporary Art and many of his works are included in private collections, both in Portugal and abroad, especially Spain, France, Germany and Brazil.

Individually, he exhibited at the Diário de Notícias Gallery in 1983 and, in the same year, at the Teoartes Gallery in Évora; at the D. Pedro V House of Culture, (Mafra), in 1990.

He worked with the painter António Soares on the panels of the Palace of the Assembly of the Republic; he collaborated in the Exhibition of the Portuguese World in 1940, being his authorship of the decorative arrangements and mural paintings of the “Oceania”, “Documentos” and “Military Orders” rooms; presented the panel “Os Navegadores” at the Occupation History Exhibition; joined the team led by architect Miguel Jacobetty at the National Stadium.

In 1931, he was invited to contribute to the Theater the contribution of his artistic skills as a scenographer and he remained in this activity delicately for many years.

Of the numerous models and scenography he conceived and produced, the following stand out: “L’Alouette”; by Jean Anouilh; “The hands of Euridice”, by Pedro Bloch, with Rudolfo Mayer in the lead role; “Six Characters looking for an Author”, by Pirandello, staged by Redondo Júnior; “An inspector is outside”, by Priestley, with João Vilaret; “O Mar”, by Miguel Torga, by Teatro Experimental do Porto, under the direction of António Pedro; “Ana Cristina”, adaptation by Henrique Galvão, from the work of Eugénio O’Neil; “Bailados e Cantares de Portugal”, by Fernando Lima and Águeda Sena.

He collaborated, as editing director, in several revues and operettas.

From 1941 onwards, he extended his artistic contribution to Cinema, as a model maker, decorator and set designer, namely in the films: “Camões”, by Leitão de Barros; “O Desterrado”, by Manuel Guimarães; “The Last Crime of João Bolandas”, from the novel by Domingues Monteiro, produced by Bourdin de Macedo and directed by Jorge Brun do Canto; “Vidas sem Rumo”, directed by Manuel Guimarães based on a screenplay by Alves Redol and Guimarães.

In 1952, he went to Brazil, expressly hired as a set designer for theatre, cinema and television, but, despite the excellent conditions he enjoyed there, he returned, impelled by nostalgia, in 1956.

He was part, as a model maker and illustrator, of the Newsrooms of the newspaper directed by Augusto de Castro, “Anoite”, and of the weekly directed by Artur Portela, “Mundo Histórico”. Between 1965 and 1981 he dedicated himself especially to mural painting, tapestry and ceramics, executing works for the Palace of Justice in Almada, Church of Alcoentre, Palace of Justice of Alcácer do Sal, Hospital of Portalegre, Municipality of Miranda do Douro and Chapel of Hospital Egas Moniz in Lisbon.

His teaching activity - which he had already carried out at the secondary schools “Afonso Domingos” and “António Arroio” - resumed in 1956, as a teacher at the School of Decorative Arts António Arroio. That same year, he took public exams for a position as a teacher at the 5th grade. Group from the Lisbon Superior School of Fine Arts, obtaining the title of Associate Professor.

In 1974, he was appointed full professor of painting, a function he held until he reached the age limit on June 10, 1981. He was part of the board without ever ceasing to teach his students.

It belongs to the Academy of Fine Arts. He continues to work and give private lessons in his studio at Palácio dos Coruchéus in Lisbon.

After the painter's death, which occurred in 1991, Mestre Manuel Lima's family proposed to hold a series of exhibitions with works by the artist. Two of these exhibitions were already held in 1992. One, at Padrão dos Descobrimentos under the sponsorship of the Municipality of Lisbon and at Casa da Cultura D. Pedro V promoted by the Municipality of Mafra.
