Bernd Ullrich was born in 1949 in the Black Forest town of Bad Teinach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. During his childhood years he lived in Gross Gerau near Frankfurt am Main and spent a lot of time with his maternal Grandfather, Dr. Jacob Wettlauffer, an accomplished painter in the style of the German Romantics. Later he attended the Paul-Gerhardt-Gymnasium in Laubach nearby the Count Solms-Laubach castle, where he excelled in his art studies under the guidance of a Bauhaus trained art teacher. After completing his schooling, Ullrich attended the Schuldorf Bergstrasse in Seeheim, where he studied horticulture before working at the Merck Pharmaceutical Company, Darmstadt.

In his early twenties he moved to Queensland, Australia, where he worked at the Science Department of the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education (later the University of Southern Queensland) before undertaking a degree in art, with a performance and visual art double major in 1972. During his studies, he was greatly influenced by Hollywood actor and director, Robert Gist. After graduating, former Director of the National Gallery of Australia, Betty Churcher, opened his first solo exhibition at the Linton Gallery in Toowoomba, Queensland. Twenty-six solo and numerous mixed exhibitions of paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and jewellery followed across Australia. In relation to Ullrich’s early work Archibald Prize winner, William Robinson wrote,

“There is a unity in the idea, the material and the process which can be carried out successfully, whether he is working in a small scale drawing or a major painting. His work is about pure form and has no visible relationship to reality but can be evocative of reality in the mind of the viewer. His space works over the surface of the canvas and creates illusions of depth – it consists of galaxies of matter”.

Since 1979, he has resided on a heavily timbered 360 acre property where he had his art studio built amongst the native forest. He continued to design jewelry and paint oils until the 1990’s, when he shifted his attention to sculptures. Ullrich continues to produce a large number of works, ranging from small intimate to large outdoor sculptures, including 3.5 tonne concrete castings for the Crow’s Nest Indoor Sports Centre.

In 1993 Ullrich worked with Thai artist Tamniab Chuawiwat on a collaborative sculptural project for an exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane. In 2002 he worked with Aboriginal woodcarver’s in Aurukun, Cape York Peninsula, including Arthur Koo-ekka Pambegan Jr, Joe Ngallametta, Ron Yunkaporta, Jubilee Wolmby, Gary Namponen, Jack Bell, Craig Koomeeta, Charlie Bob Poochemunka, and Roderick Yunkaportain in preparation for the Queensland/Berlin Indigenous Art exhibition at the Ludwig Erhard Haus, Berlin, Germany and the Story Place: Indigenous Art of Cape York and the Rainforest exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.
