Le Cervin, sans doute la montagne la plus célèbre d'Europe, dresse son profil majestueux à 4478 mètres d'altitude, au cœur d'un panorama alpin à couper le souffle. Ce sommet en forme de pyramide, dont l'ascension est réputée difficile, est sans doute la montagne la plus photographiée du monde. En 1865, deux cordées, l'une britannique, l'autre italienne, attaquent à peu près en même temps le Cervin. L'expédition britannique en sort victorieuse, elle arrive au sommet moins d'une journée avant la cordée italienne. L'ascension par l'arête du Hörnli, depuis Zermatt, le 14 juillet 1865, fut considérée comme le dernier des grands exploits de l'alpinisme dans les Alpes.
