"The Horn" of its real name The Matterhorn or Matterhorn in German, horn means horn in German. It is also called the Caillou! The Matterhorn, arguably the most famous mountain in Europe, lifts its majestic profile at an altitude of 4,478 meters, in the heart of a breathtaking Alpine panorama. This pyramid-shaped summit, known to be difficult to climb, is arguably the most photographed mountain in the world. In 1865, two roped parties, one British, the other Italian, attacked the Matterhorn roughly at the same time. The British expedition emerged victorious, reaching the summit less than a day before the Italian roped party. The ascent by the Hörnli ridge from Zermatt on July 14, 1865 was considered the last of the great feats of alpinism in the Alps.
