Mary Swift is London based professional artist and illustrator, the third generation artist in her family, she’s been actively painting from the early childhood, graduated classic art school and university with degree in textile interior design, now working as a free painter and running her own international art business, and, in addition to published works, working now on the new children’s book about the birds of London.
Working from the background of wide experience, Mary feels free creating in any medium that would be most expressive for the given idea, but prefers traditional acrylic and oil on canvas, painting in detailed, graphic, realistic style, embellished with the emotional accents of the strong brush strokes.
On her creative path Mary went from flowers and animals to the transport and urban sceneries, painting American and London cityscapes, but with growing interest to the urban wildlife, which in recent years crystallised in series devoted to the crows, ravens and other corvids.
The special attention is to the Ravens of the Tower of London, from which the raven theme has begun, and other distinguished birds, living in close contact with humans.
Mary’s works always focusing on the individual character and personality of these magnificent birds, through the detailed and loving portraying of every bird, aiming to raise awareness and due appreciation of these significant creatures, whose name and symbolism needs to be reevaluated in modern culture, giving them admiration, awe and attention, they deserve.
Mary’s art is leading away from the dark morbid associations inherited in the traditional raven’s image, and to the new understanding and joy of the personal contact with these beings that can bring so much happiness.
Mary hopes with her art, that maybe, starting from the ravens, this change could be affected in people’s minds in a broader sense.
