Over the years her style has evolved using various media including etching, drawing, collage and oil paint. Currently, she has created her own distinctive form of expression with the use of mixed media on panel. Pauwels’ canvas’ are wooden blocks, built upon with newsprint, sand and oil paints. each one a commentary, many with imbedded written, often ambiguous or challenging, thoughts.

The Belgian contemporary artist Marleen Pauwels was born in Dendermonde in 1959. She studied life drawing at the Constantin Meunier Art school in Brussels, graphic design at the Royal Academy of fine arts in Dendermonde and etching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Aalst.
In 2001 she moved to Spain where she continues today, to work as an Independent artist.
Pauwels has had both solo and group shows at museums, galleries, artist-run spaces and art fairs.
Her artwork has been reviewed internationally and can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe.

Art has always been a necessity for me. Being able to lose myself in the creative process is more important to me than anything else.

The human figure is a constant presence in my work, emerging from my fascination with the fragility of the human condition. Over the years my style has evolved using various media including etching, drawing, collage and oil paint. Currently, I have created my own distinctive form of expression with the use of mixed media on panel. My application of colour has been inspired by the natural earth pigments I have discovered during my many travels throughout Spain.

The ‘wall’ often figures as the background of my images. I create these walls using different layers of newsprint, sand and oilpaint, always leaving carefully chosen textlayers visible.
Once my foundation has been established, I draw my elongated, almost transparent human figures. The juxtaposition of these figures within the environment becomes my statement. I know my work is finished when it moves me in every way.
