A bridge between memory and imagination
Forty years after Christo and Jeanne-Claude's iconic wrapping of the Pont Neuf, Paris is preparing to relive one of those rare moments when the urban landscape shifts into the realm of total art. Invited to revisit this seminal gesture, JR opts neither for quotation nor simple reactivation: he proposes a new, almost telluric vision, transforming Paris's oldest bridge into a vast rock formation that seems to spring from the bed of the Seine to span it in a single sweep.
The artist envisions a monumental cavern – not a backdrop, but a passageway. The public is invited to enter this mineral outgrowth as if stepping into a geological dream, where the walls seem to tell the buried story of the stone. JR doesn't cover the bridge: he opens it, he embodies it, he imagines it as an ancient organism whose surface suddenly cracks to reveal its primitive epidermis.
The echo of a historic gesture
The project naturally engages in a dialogue with the 1985 work. Where Christo revealed architecture by enveloping it, JR chooses to probe it, explore it, and allow it to breathe in a new way. The original work had revolutionized the way Parisians saw things: it had proven that heritage could become, for a few weeks, a territory of freedom. With this new intervention, JR takes up the torch, inscribing his tribute in a different temporality—that of immersion, of traversing, of direct contact with the fictional material he installs in the heart of the city.
This “Caverne du Pont Neuf” is not a replica of the past: it is its contemporary resonance, nourished by a new aesthetic ambition and a sensitivity turned towards the visitor's experience.
An experience at the crossroads of worlds
Visible from June 6 to 28, 2026 , the installation will unfold like an unexpected landscape in the heart of Paris. It can be discovered from the bridge itself, by walking close to its imaginary walls, but also from the riverbanks, where the perspective will accentuate the impression of a geological outcrop spanning the Seine. Boats gliding under the arches will offer yet another interpretation: that of a suspended grotto, floating between sky and water.
Designed to be legible in both the bright light of day and the soft glow of evening, the artwork will play with variations in light, making its textures and reliefs vibrate. From dawn to dusk, the bridge will become a stage for metamorphoses, each passage revealing a new nuance, an unexpected detail, a depth that one thought one had grasped but which still eludes us.
FAQ
When will we be able to see the cavern of the Pont Neuf?
The installation will be open to the public from June 6 to 28, 2026 , three weeks during which the Pont Neuf will take on the appearance of an imaginary rocky landscape.
How will we be able to discover the work?
Several viewpoints will be possible: walking on the bridge and crossing the cavern, from the banks of the Seine for a panoramic view, or from boats gliding under the arches for a spectacular view from the water.
Is this a re-edition of Christo's packaging?
No. JR is not recreating the 1985 work: he is reinterpreting it. Where Christo enveloped, JR “digs in”, imagining a fantastic rock formation revealing an imaginary part of the bridge.
Will the installation be free?
Yes, like all of JR's monumental interventions in public spaces. Access is completely free.
Why turn the Pont Neuf into a cave?
JR wants to evoke the monument's original material, as if the bridge were suddenly revealing its mineral heart. It's a poetic way of connecting history, architecture, and imagination.
Will the artwork be visible at night?
Yes. It is designed to interact with both natural light and nighttime lighting, offering very different effects depending on the time of day.
