Hristo Prodanov was a Bulgarian Alpinist - Bulgaria's most celebrated and accomplished climber - the first to climb Everest via the difficult West Ridge route without oxygen and alone - the first ever to climb and summit Everest in the difficult weather conditions of the month of April which was ultimately to end in his fatality upon descending - I came to know of him through a Bulgarian colleague who knew of him via a Bulgarian band called the Ku-Ku band and their song "Prituri sa planinata" - or... " he repeats over the radio again and again imploring him to keep moving as he knows that if Hristo stops he will certainly die - but Hristo keeps mumbling back in response how cold and tired he is - how he wants to stop to rest ...

the lyrics of the song are:

Притури са планината,
че затрупа два овчера,
че затрупа два овчера,
два овчера - два другаря.
Първи моли - пусни мене.
Мене чака първо любе.
Втори моли - пусни мене.
Мене чака стара майка.
Проговаря планината:
"Ой ви вази два овчаря,
любе жали ден до пладне,
майка жали чак до гроба

which translates (roughly) as:

Overwhelmed by the mountain,
that has buried two Shepherds,
that has buried two Shepherds,
two Shepherds - two comrades.
The first prays - "let me go.
My first love is waiting for me".
The second prays - "let me go.
An old mother is waiting for me".
Speaks the mountain:
"Oh I have two shepherds,
love pity today until noon,
as a mother cries all the way to the grave"

Hristo was posthumously awarded the Hero of the People's Republic of Bulgaria in 1984 - another celebrated Bulgarian climber named Boyan Petrov died in May 3rd 2018 attempting to summit the 8000m peak of Shishapangma alone and without oxygen and who was also caught in severe storm conditions - had he succeeded he was scheduled to summit Everest next - two Bulgarian Shepherds ....
