Mei Yangguang is a contemporary Chinese sculptor based in Shenzhen, China. Originally trained as a designer, Mei found himself growing weary of the repetitive nature of his design work and sought a more fulfilling artistic path. In 2014, he embarked on a new journey into the world of wood carving, driven by a belief that art can offer spiritual solace and joy in an era of fast-paced living.
Since transitioning from design to sculpture, Mei Yangguang has made significant strides in the art world. His wood carving art reflects his conviction that creativity can provide a deep sense of comfort and happiness. In 2020, his piece “Bronze Year Wood Language” was honored with the Taiwan Golden Dot Annual Best Design Award, and in 2019, it also received the China Design Red Star Award. Mei's work was further showcased in 2018 when “Wooden Lamp Dog” earned the Shenzhen Global Design Award.
In 2022, Mei Yangguang’s “Playing Cat” series was featured in the Shenzhen Longgang Public Art Week Exhibition, highlighting his ongoing exploration of wood carving as a medium for contemporary art. Most recently, in 2023, his “Xu Jing” series was part of the “Contemporary Sculpture Art Exhibition—Reconstruction of All Things” at the Shenzhen Jupiter Art Museum, marking a notable contribution to the field of modern sculpture.
