Jean-Michel Desterke is a contemporary Belgian artist whose work in drawing and painting serves as his personal space of freedom. The human condition is the central theme of his art, yet he expresses this without constraints of style and form.

A self-taught artist, Desterke's passion for drawing and painting has been a long-standing one, though it was often set aside until 2015. That year marked a significant turning point when he decided to participate in drawing workshops led by Ms. Brigitte Debay and painting workshops with Mr. Vilson Biçaku at the Academy of Fine Arts in Châtelet.

Desterke's primary tools include graphite pencil, charcoal, watercolor, and acrylic paint. He frequently draws and paints portraits and nudes from live models, often working in series. His artistic approach is characterized by a spirit of freedom and lack of constraint, allowing him to fluidly transition from figurative to abstract work and from color to black and white.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, Desterke created around fifteen graphite pencil drawings depicting the deserted workshops of the academy. These drawings formed the basis of his "L’atelier Confined" series, a collection of vibrant acrylic paintings in bright, "anti-gloom" colors. This series led to his selection for the Bon Vouloir exhibition in Mons in 2022 and 2023.

In 2023, Desterke created his largest and most colorful painting to date (2.1 x 1.45 meters) as a homage to the city of Charleroi. Jean-Michel Desterke continues to explore and express the complexities of the human condition through his dynamic and evolving body of work.
