I have been intrigued about all the men crying on tv since 911 and decided quite a while ago to attempt a "Crying man" series. I tried to photograph crying men on the news. It seemed to me that things are really bad when grown men are crying publicly at every turn. I talked to a male artist friend of mine who said, men of his (older) generation do not even know how to cry. It was never accepted in our culture. Aggressive behavior, confrontational language and war are the usual solutions. Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. were unusual in their interest in non-violent protest and I am not sure we saw either of them cry. Maybe King. Anyway, after I did the paintings I decided to "google" the topic and was shocked to see I was not the only one amazed by this occurrence. It supported my premise, so that was good!
