Britain's coastal defences fascinate me. This fort, built in 1870, is an example of a Palmerston Fort. Never used in anger, these forts were the most expensive coastal defences ever built in peacetime in this country and were sometimes referred to as "Palmeston's follies" I wonder what life was like for the people who worked in them.

I'd love to do a series of drawings, etchings or paintings of other coastal defences - that would be a great project.
