Jennifer Jean Okumura
As I created these new works, I was keenly aware that every mark I made was made by one hand--my hand--and that the finished product would live and breathe as part of a world in which we all are tenants and share. An expression is synonymous with Mother Earth, leading to our departure from the stations of life, searching for new noise and passion, and empowering and encouraging change. In this conception, 'Nature' is not a source of material for production but the beginning and end of all life and culture. My work is centered around the main idea of being nowhere and everywhere, waltzing around cultural boundaries with beliefs and traveling through form and energy, attempting to incorporate conflict, balance, and harmony to shape the work's influences, thoughts, and hope for the same thing and shared moment.
Jennifer grew up in Philadelphia. She attended Syracuse University in addition to receiving her MFA from Boston University. She has a strong comprehensive knowledge of the Art Market: Modern and Contemporary Art, with diverse and extensive Fine Art experiences as an Operations Manager, Fine Art Consultant, Design Associate, Adjunct Educator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, coFounder of Art Advising Group Invoke Contemporary with Diana Stelin the Founding member of DTR Modern, and currently sits on the board as President and founding Exhibition Chair for National Association of Women Artists, Inc. MA chapter and former The FPAC Board of Directors.

HOPSCOTCH. CARE TO PLAY?
HOPSCOTCH. CARE TO PLAY? by Claudia Fiks, Arts Administrator. Arts and Culture Producer
Curated by Marsha Nouritza Odabashian and Jennifer Jean Okumura, the artists of the ongoing “Hopscotch” exhibition take us back to familiar places, bringing smiles, happiness, and hope to our daily lives.
Hopscotch
Layered with meaning, Hopscotch is imbued with physicality, psychology, entertainment, and challenge. This multimedia exhibition marks the grid in a child’s game of hopscotch as a starting point. It quickly diverges into various topics, including play, gender, mathematics, philosophy, literature, and art history. Extending across cultures, continents, and time, hopscotch imagery was discovered on painted greyware in Ancient India. Also, it has been reported to have been used as endurance training for soldiers in the Roman Empire. The exhibition plays hopscotch by evoking movement and conveying a sense of passing through geographical areas or fields of endeavor.https://vimeo.com/744935916

Our Face of Ours is Revealed in the New Year
Art and its ability to elevate people inspire me, and how I perceived 2020 felt like every day for creatives. On some level, art is life—telling a story or simply creating our lives.
As artists, we are in tune with the activity of past and present, who push the envelope to the maximum of what is defined as art. Life’s honest words can best be summed up in a line by Jorge Luis Borges (from Dreamtigers), “Art must be like that mirror that reveals to us this face of ours.” For 2020, open and honest imagery and words were a way to express oneself—it was vital, not just therapeutic. It revealed our thirst for world stories never told; this became a 2020 mission and the essence of our heartfelt pandemic narratives of resilience, healing, solidarity, and freedom.
