J’avais traversé le jardin du Luxembourg en cherchant le regard des passantes pour l’accrocher aux banches frigorifiées des hauts arbres. Le temps était à la bise. J’avais traversé le jardin du Luxembourg en cherchant le regard des passantes pour l’accrocher aux banches frigorifiées des hauts arbres. Les statues de pierre étaient nues et moi j’avais noué à triple tour une écharpe grise comme le temps.
Je suis entré au Hibou où m’attirait la lumière des lampes claires. Leur halo dessinait des mondes. J’allais pouvoir jouer les badauds dans la tiédeur douce et le parfum du café.
Soudain je l’ai vue.
Ma vie passée s’est éteinte. J’ai commandé deux cafés en bégayant et en rêvant, muet, de lui offrir d’en boire un à ma table.
Au passage elle m’a souri. Son sourire avait la couleur de tous les soleils.
En moi les statues du Luxembourg se sont couvertes d’or. J’étais à Petrodvorets dans le jardin des tsars. J’étais un roi.
Le mouchoir de batiste qu’elle tenait entre les mains était le plus fin et le seul digne de recevoir son portrait. J’aurais voulu brûler tous les pinceaux, jeter tous les couteaux, déchirer toutes les toiles et recommencer à peindre comme un enfant.
Elle est passée et j’en meurs.

Jean-Paul Schmitt was born in 1947, in France. He is a member of the Lyons Academy of Painting (ALP), the Regional Association of Arts (ARA) and the Group of Twelve.
