Jan Aanstoot is a contemporary Dutch painter. He started with realistic landscape paintings, but bit by bit the landscapes lost their horizon and their structure of creating space, and his work became expressionistic and abstract.

The relationship between image and reality, art's possible transcendental nature, the relationship between rationality and intuition, and the interpretation of the meaning of a piece of art are all issues that Jan Aanstoot cannot easily ignore. He believes that the connection between spirituality and painting lies in something completely different: spirituality is a way of dealing with one's own freedom, aversion to conformism, and constant search for the right image. It's a state of being unbound that's mirrored in the artwork.

Jan Aanstoot was born in 1948, in the Netherlands, where he graduated at the Academy of Art in Arnhem. He has exhibited in Holland, France, Italy, Switzerland and Dubai.
