J'ai peint "Sur les toits de Bréhat" au mois d'Octobre. Je rêvais depuis longtemps de peindre cette vue que l'on a depuis la chapelle St Michel sur les toits de ce petit ensemble de maisons.
Le temps n'était pas de mon côté ce jour là et menaçait continuellement l'avancée de mon travail par quelques grosses gouttes ici et là. L'avantage de cette météo c'est la solitude qu'elle nous offre, l'inconvénient c'est la lumière... alors je l'ai inventée j'ai décoré le ciel de couleurs irréelles, j'ai couvert le toit des maisons du bleu de la mer. J'ai fais danser mon couteau pour multiplier les reliefs et donner vie à l'oeuvre.

I painted « On the Roofs of Bréhat » in the month of October. I had long dreamt of painting this commanding view from St Michel’s Chapel, when gazing at this lovely little group of houses huddled together.
I had to make do with the unsettled weather conditions which were threatening to ruin my artistic endeavour.
Rain drops would occasionally intrude upon my work uninvited, forcing me to interrupt my task.
If I were to find any advantage with these weather conditions, I would say that they provided me with a welcome opportunity to be on my own, undisturbed by human presence.
On the other hand, inconvenients include the elusiveness of the light. This phenomenon makes it tricky to capture the desired moment.
Consequently I decided to invent the ideal moment. So I imagined the colours of the sky and imparted to the roofs the deep blue hues of the sea.
My palette knife seems to be dancing in order to enhance the relief-like impressions and make this art-piece come to life.
