Hugo spent his teenage years growing up in Cornwall where he developed a deep love for the landscape and its people before studying fine art at the University of Brighton. There he acquired a deep attraction to the natural world. This visually influences his practice and he uses the patterns, shapes and textures of nature to explore theories and ideas about the human psyche.
The people in the portraits are friends, his family and himself; He likes to try to capture expression and movement, even the slowest, while being as faithful to the anatomical form as possible. His work attempts to bridge the gap between traditional methods and more modern expressions of the line.
This exhibition highlights a new interest in etching in a series of portraits. His work exhibits a strong sense of movement through the detailed trace of marking.
