Hortala is a painter from southern France.  Born in Bézier, he has called Toulouse home for the past 20 years.

His paintings have often been associated with the brutalist movement, where vertical forms encounter the starkness of concrete. The painter has always been fascinated by the city. Indeed, he has made it his principal subject.  For Hortala, the city is neither dirty, nor stifling. Rather, it is the beating heart of modern humans, full of opportunities and hope.

Hortala sees his practice as a challenge that is not so much technical, as it is social.  But he doesn’t seek to overly intellectualize his art, for the urban buildings and roofs emerge spontaneously from under his brush.
